Woman Celebrating Healthy Weight LossThere are plenty of unhealthy diets around, but healthy weight loss is really easier to achieve and better for the body over the long term.

Why is Healthy Weight Loss Important?

First, it is helpful to understand that unhealthy diets lead to some long range problems for the human body.  The high protein, Atkins Diet, for instance, was all the rage for a while despite reports of health problems for consumers. People claiming to have been harmed by high-protein diets reported their setbacks on a Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) Web site registry that found:

  • 42 percent reported loss of energy
  • 31 percent reported difficulty concentrating
  • 22 percent reported kidney problems
  • 20 percent reported heart-related problems

What About Nutrisystem for Healthy Weight Loss?

Is Weight Watchers a Healthy Diet? Woman Celebrating Healthy Weight Loss on Scale

Describing some short-comings for this weight loss plan, Barbara Aufiero writes in The Dangers of Weight Watchers (http://www.livestrong.com/article/337442-the-dangers-of-weight-watchers/), “Although Weight Watchers contends that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from eating enough fruits and vegetables, that would require most people to triple the amount of fruit and vegetables eaten every day....In addition, the point system does not require you to eat any fruits or vegetables every day, which could lead to vitamin deficiency.”

Weight Watchers foods are also high in sodium, which can be a big problem for anyone with high blood pressure or excess weight.  Additionally, their point system can lead to under-nourishment.  Aufiero says, “So if you ate one [Weight Watchers meal] for breakfast, lunch and dinner, your total caloric intake for the day would be under 1000, which is less than half of the average recommended intake. Undernourishment slows down your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight. It may also make you feel too tired or too weak to engage in exercise, an essential component of weight loss.”Sunrider Whole Food Concentrates
