Do you drinking enough? Do you think you ever experience dehydration? You just might be surprised!
Dehydration happens when you use or lose more fluid than you take in. If you don’t replace the lost fluids, you get dehydrated.
The human body needs liquid to maintain enough blood and other fluids to function properly. Along with the fluids, the body also needs electrolytes, which are salts normally found in blood, other fluids, and cells.
Summer is upon us and thinking about your fluid intake is something you will want to do. So many people drink soda to prevent dehydration. This is a tragic mistake! Soda contains phosphoric acid, which is so harmful it takes about 30 glasses of water to neutralize one can of pop. It is worse than salt, sugar, and caffeine. The acid causes retention of fluid in the body. Too much acid in the body creates a very toxic situation.
If you’re drinking diet soda to lose weight or stay slim, forget it! Many studies reveal that diet soda actually tends to promote weight gain. In a 9-year study of adults occasional diet soda drinkers gained an average of 1.83 inches to their waistline. Daily diet soda drinkers gained an average of 3.2 inches which was quadruple that of those who abstained from diet soda altogether.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION?
* Bad breath
"Dehydration can give you bad breath," says Marshall Young, DDS, a dentist in Newport Beach, Calif. "Saliva has important antibacterial properties. When dehydrated, the decreased bacteria in the mouth allows bacteria to thrive, resulting in bad breath." So drink up not just for your own sake, but also for those around you!
Fortune Delight and Calli can keep your breath fresh and clean. Remember the SunSmile Toothpaste! The REFRESHER DROPS, which I squirt in my mouth after brushing my teeth, actually keep the mouth fresh for HOURS.
* It makes you cranky
Is it possible that a glass of tea can change your mood? A study published in the Journal of Nutrition tested mood and concentration in 25 young women who were either given enough fluids to remain properly hydrated, or who became mildly dehydrated by taking diuretics and exercising. The dehydrated women who were at a level that was just 1% lower than optimal reported headaches, loss of focus, and irritability.
Not only do CALLI and FORTUNE DELIGHT provide nutrients, which help your mood, NuPlus and VitaTaste provide complex carbohydrates, which instantly feed your brain and provide it energy.
* It makes you tired
Do you get tired in the afternoon? It may be blood sugar (NuPlus) but it may also be that you are dehydrated. "When you're dehydrated your blood pressure drops, heart rate increases, blood flow to the brain slows – all of which can make you tired," says Luga Podesta, MD, sports medicine specialist at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, Calif.
Your body is about 60% water. Lose even 1.5% of that and your energy levels and your mood all drop according to research from the University of Connecticut.
Calli and Fortune Delight are one of the quickest ways to keep your energy up during the day or give you a quick pick up when you are feeling down.
* It makes you crave sugar
Do you crave carbs after a work out? Here’s the problem if you've been exercising, says Amy Goodson, RD, sports dietitian for the Dallas Cowboys:
“When you exercise in a dehydrated state, you use glycogen (stored carbohydrate) at a faster rate, thus diminishing your stores more quickly." So once you finish exercising, you will likely crave carbs to help you replenish those glycogen levels and get you ready for your next exercise bout.”
NuPlus, as well as Stevia in the SUNNYDEW and SUNECTAR help to prevent cravings as they nourish the pancreas and help your body balance blood sugar.
Even being slightly dehydrated can cause your exercise performance to go down and affect your ability to workout. "A 2% dehydration level in your body causes a 10% decrease in athletic performance," says Goodson. " And the more dehydrated you become, the worse performance gets." You might be working at a 6 but you feel like you are working at an 8.
Drink before and after a workout to prevent dehydration.
"When you lack water it less blood circulation which can make muscles cramp up," says Ray Casciari, MD, medical director of the La Amistad Family Health Center in Orange, Calif. "The body will protect its vital organs, so it shifts fluid away from muscles and anything that's not vital," he says. If you’ve ever had one, you know how painful they are. Changes in sodium and potassium through sweat loss can also contribute to cramping.
Calcium in the NuPlus completely stopped leg cramps in my children who had previously been taking a calcium supplement because the calcium is in the food in synergy so all nutrients work together for assimilation as nature intended. Of course there is calcium in the Calli and Fortune Delight as well.
* You get dry skin
Keeping skin healthy and glowing requires drinking enough water, said Anne Marie Tremain, MD, a dermatologist with Laser Skin Care Center Dermatology Associates in Long Beach, Calif. "It's best to hydrate from the inside out." Depending on your lifestyle you may need to adjust your liquid intake. If you work out every day or are a caffeine fiend, for instance, then you'll need to drink more because workouts make you sweat and caffeine is a diuretic, which can dehydrate you.”
Not only do you need to drink lots of CALLI and or FORTUNE DELIGHT [which have NO available caffeine] keep your skin hydrated by using the Deep Moisture Lotion and Replenish in the daytime and Night Emulsion at night.
* Urination problems and kidney stones
The less water you drink, the less you pee. The less you pee, the more likely you are to give yourself kidney stones. A kidney stone is a buildup of minerals in the urine, caused by dehydration and accelerated by caffeine and sodium intake.
Kidney stones are painful to pass and can only be prevented by changing one’s diet.
CALLI helps the body to flush out inorganic salts that can develop into kidney stones so drink, drink, drink!
* It can give you the chills, dizziness, or a headache
Dehydration can bring on chills. "This occurs because your body starts to limit blood flow to the skin," says Dr. Podesta. Dehydration can cause headaches in a couple of different ways. "Lack of water affects your body's serotonin levels, which can give you headaches," says Dr. Casciari. “When you’re low on fluid, your brain also gets less blood circulation, which can make you dizzy.”
Recently on a Senior high school trip one of the boys got dizzy with chills and a bad headache. After taking him to the urgent care it was discovered the problem was dehydration. He wasn’t drinking enough on a very hot day at Disneyland!
* It constipates you
Your body needs liquids to keep things moving through your colon. When you're not getting enough H2O, your body will compensate by withdrawing fluid from your stool, making it harder and more difficult to pass.
If you are taking the Sunrider basics you are not only getting sufficient liquid, you are getting fiber which helps the bowels move properly, think SUNBAR and Vitadophilus!
