Resveratrol is the “new” natural weight loss powerhouse of nutrition that can help you manage a healthy figure and live to be 120. Anyone searching for health products over the past decade has most likely been exposed to the hype about "new" nutritional discoveries regarding products made with Noni, Mangosteen, Acai Berry or whatever the latest fad. These are all just fruits that are high in antioxidants and usually alkaline, which are two great benefits for the body. However, the natural weight loss and other benefits these products promised did not manifest for most consumers. Now, though, Resveratrol is the one new discovery that is delivering more than researchers first imagined. Some are really calling this one, the "fountain of youth" nutrient.
Approximately twenty years ago, scientists first began to examine the so-called 'French paradox', which suggested that the French - despite a high fat diet and high consumption of wine - had a remarkably low incidence of heart disease compared with Americans. Most researchers agreed that there was something in the wine, and a few years later, even the highly cautious federal dietary guidelines came out supporting 'a moderate consumption of red wine' to be beneficial.
Finally, scientists identified a substance in red wine called Resveratrol that could help with natural weight loss, protect the heart, and in very high concentrations, could significantly extend life by preventing a number of age related illnesses.
Of course, at first they did research on animals. Resveratrol was tested on mice who were fed a high fat diet for 12 weeks. When placed on a treadmill, the mice that were on Resveratrol could run twice as far and lived about 20% longer. Other studies showed that for mice fed a high fat diet, those taking Resveratrol didn't gain as much weight as those not given it. Scientists concluded that Resveratrol actually changed the physiology of the mice. So, a discovery about this fabulous nutrient is that it helps people consume fewer calories, which leads to natural weight loss and greater longevity.
In one Resveratrol experiment that lasted nearly twenty years, a group of Rhesus monkeys were consuming 30% fewer calories than their well-fed brothers and sisters. As the control animals neared the end of a typical monkey lifespan, about 27 years, major differences in their overall health were becoming clear. The skinny monkeys actually looked younger, their coats shinier, and fewer had arthritis. As for the chunky monkeys, some got diabetes and a significantly higher number developed cancer and heart disease. So, this ability to limit calorie consumption gives Resveratrol its power when it comes to natural weight loss.
The problem is that you need to consume thousands of bottles of red wine to gain the benefits of Resveratrol. It's just not concentrated enough to produce the same results as seen in the mice and monkeys. The research was conducted with the amount of Resveratrol that would be in approximately 1000 bottles of wine a day.
Now we know, Resveratrol, found in the skin of grapes (therefore in red wine), and a few other natural sources, is truly a healthy marvel. No wonder scientists are calling it the "fountain of youth" nutrient. Not only may it help us live much longer and achieve natural weight loss, there are many other benefits associated with Resveratrol.
